Illnesses Caused by Spirits

Kundun does not tell me to refuse amputation. He tests me. He questions me. I have been turning this question over and over again in my mind for weeks. I came to the United States convinced that the sophisticated American health system should easily cure a man like me, in the prime of life, hardened by a rough but healthy lifestyle on the high plateaus. How is it possible that Western civilization, which masters so many fabulous techniques, would not know how to treat the problem with my ankle? It has taken me a few months to understand that such is not the case.

“Why do you seek healing outside of yourself?”

When my inner voice first told me not to accept amputation, I obviously listened to it, since I refused the protocol for the operation that the doctors were urging me to accept. But I did not go deeper into the subject. I did not try to understand where this voice was coming from, nor what it was revealing to me. I did this precisely because I was expecting to be healed from the outside, a providential healing. I was expecting everything from Western science.

Now I am admitting that the pathology I am suffering from is beyond existing treatments. From a medical point of view, my illness is incurable. Moreover, my caretakers have given up hope for me. From the beginning, they have not ceased repeating that my ankle is dead; that if I wait any longer, my leg will die; and that, if this happens, I will end up dying. Such is the external and physiological dimension of my illness. It is supported and confirmed by X-rays, tissue analysis, and blood tests. This picture is final. It is a death warrant.

“Why do you seek healing outside of yourself?”

In asking me this question, the Dalai Lama reminds me that, if my gangrene cannot be taken care of by the hospital, it does not imply that it is incurable. It is not fatal. It can be treated, or even healed, by using a treatment protocol that is not only physical. Kundun is urging me to become aware of the true nature of my illness.

Pema Dorje has told me about the tragic case of a young monk from Namgyal, the Dalai Lama’s private monastery. His first name was also Pema, and he was the Dalai Lama’s favorite artist. He was brilliant; he spoke and wrote English perfectly. He had studied under Robert Thurman and had been awarded a master’s degree at Columbia University in New York City. Then he was suddenly affected by a serious health problem, a tumor in the lung. In addition to consulting Western doctors, Pema consulted Tibetan doctors, who recommended not to operate. They diagnosed that the cause of the illness was not physical. It was provoked by nagas, the spirits of water. Pema had taken part in the ritual consecrating the temple dedicated to them in the Dalai Lama’s residence in Dharamsala. Perhaps he had
